In 2024, daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. That will put us back into standard time and end Daylight Saving Time (DST). Next weekend, we “fall back" and gain an extra hour of sleep between Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Make sure to set clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday. Clocks that align themselves with the atomic clock, such as cell phones, will automatically change at 2:00 a.m.
We gain an hour in November to make for more daylight in the winter mornings. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 formalized the United States’ period of daylight saving time observation as lasting six months (it was previously declared locally). This period was extended to seven months in 1986, and then to eight months in 2005. The latest extension was motivated in part by lobbyists from the candy industry who sought to increase sales and profits by including Halloween (October 31) within the daylight saving time period.
